Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is a powerful probe of elementary excitations in solids. It now widely applied to study magnetic excitations. However, its complex cross-section means that RIXS has been more difficult interpret than neutron (INS). Here we report high-resolution measurements La2CuO4, the antiferromagnetic parent one system high-temperature superconductors. At high energies (~2 eV), spectra show angular-dependent dd orbital which are found be good agreement with single-site multiplet calculations. lower (<0.3 wavevector-dependent intensities proportional product single-ion spin-flip cross section and dynamical susceptibility spin-wave When crosssection dividing out, magnon remarkable resemblance INS data. Our results quantitative spin cuprate therefore should used for investigation other correlated electron materials.
